About Us

Empowering Women, Girls and Youths for a Dignified Life

Human Dignity Initiative (HDI) is a registered Tanzanian Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) committed to promoting human dignity and rights, particularly for women, girls, and youths in Tanzania (Registration number: 00NGO/R/9182). As a grassroots, youth-led, and women-led organization, HDI is driven by a fervent passion to champion human dignity and rights.

Our History

HDI was founded in 2021 by a group of five dedicated women and youths in Geita region who were deeply passionate about promoting human rights, particularly for women, girls, and youths in Tanzania. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these visionary women witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the crisis on women, girls and youths, especially in rural areas of the Lake Zone. They observed with great concern the alarming rise in child pregnancies, child marriages, and the exacerbation of existing inequalities in access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) services and increasing of Gender Based Violence during the Lock down. Moved by the plurality of challenges facing women, girls, and youths during this period, these five women came together to form HDI, driven by a shared commitment to address these injustices and promote a culture of equality, dignity, and respect for all. HDI envision to promote and protect the rights of women, girls, and youths, with a focus on advancing access to SRHR, preventing and responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), promoting gender equality, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), Economic and Social Empowerment (EASE) and advocating for climate justice. We strive to empower communities to claim their rights, access opportunities, challenge social injustices, and demand accountability from duty-bearers.
